Registering a program with the "Open With" dialog

When you right-click a file and choose Open With, and click the Choose Program... option, the list of registered applications are displayed in the Open With dialog.

In some cases, when you browse to locate a file, it may not get added to the Open With dialog. To resolve the problem, you may use the utility discussed in this page to add a program to the Open With dialog.

OpenWithAdd utility for Windows® XP

Download OpenWithAdd.zip and run it. Locate the application that you want to add to the Open With dialog.

Type the command-line parameter (if the application requires one) in the appropriate text field. And optionally, type the personalized name text. This text will appear in the Open With dialog, describing the application. Once done, click the Add to Open with button.

Your application is now added to the list.

Configure Windows XP to Automatically Login

After downloading fixes from Windows Updates page or via Automatic Updates, you may notice that Windows XP no longer logs into your account automatically. This is usually caused after the installation of .NET Framework from Microsoft. It creates an additional user account called ASP.NET, which you can see in the Control Panel User Accounts applet. But, you neither need to remove this update nor delete this account. You can still configure Windows XP to automatically login using these methods:

Method 1

Click Start, Run and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, and click Ok. Select the user account from the list (the account to which you want to automatically logon). Uncheck Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer option, and click Ok. Type the user account password and complete the process.

For Windows XP Home, don't try to auto-login as the built-in Administrator, as you'll receive an error message.

How to login as Administrator in Windows XP?

The built-in Administrator account is hidden from Welcome Screen when a user account with Administrator privileges exists and enabled. In Windows XP Home Edition, you can login as built-in Administrator in Safe Mode only. For XP Professional, press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice at the Welcome Screen and input your Administrator password in the classic logon window that appears.

To have the Administrator account display in the Welcome Screen, try any of these two methods:

Method 1: Using TweakUI Power Toy for Windows XP

Download TweakUI from here:

v2.00 for Windows XP | v2.10 for XP SP1 and above

Open TweakUI and click "Logon" option in the left pane. Put a checkmark against the option "Show Administrator on Welcome Screen". Click OK to close TweakUI. Logoff and see if Welcome Screen lists Administrator login. Changes are immediate and you can use the Winkey + L to switch back to Welcome Screen to see Administrator account is listed.

Use this procedure to hide/unhide any user account from the Welcome Screen. Please remember, you can still login to a hidden account using CTRL+ALT+DEL classic logon method, but cannot Fast User Switch to a hidden user account.

Method 2 - Manual registry edit

  • Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe

  • Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Winlogon SpecialAccounts UserList

  • Use the File, Export option to backup the key.

  • Right-click in the right pane and select New DWORD Value.

  • Type-in Administrator as the value.

  • Double-click Administrator, and assign a value of 1

  • Close Regedit

You may use this procedure to hide/show users in the Welcome Screen for any user account. Type the account name accordingly in step 5.

Paper money developed in Europe in the following manner. During the Middle Ages it was customary for wealthy families to store their gold, jewels, and coins in vaults kept in the cellars of goldsmiths' shops. The goldsmiths gave written receipts for all valuables received, and these articles could be redeemed with the receipts at any time. Eventually the receipts themselves were being used as Currency by those who didn't want to take the trouble to go to the vault every time they needed money, and businesses throughout Europe began accepting them as readily as gold. The practice gradually spread: paper money became a common form of legal tender, and its use contributed to the establishment of the banking system, which was in full swing by the sixteenth century.
